From Knowing a Rule to Using It Independently
In Primary 4, pupils need to make increasingly careful choices: which tense fits the sentence, which evidence supports an answer, and which story events develop the topic. More writing does not automatically mean better writing, and copying a line from a passage does not always answer the question.
Our lessons focus on these decisions. Pupils explain their thinking, work through examples and use feedback to revise their answers before moving towards the demands of Primary 5.

The programme offers structured practice for pupils who need clearer explanations, closer correction or more guidance in developing their writing.
What Happens During a Two-Hour Lesson?
1. Homework Corrections
We begin by reviewing homework. Pupils revisit difficult questions, identify why an answer is inaccurate and make corrections. This brings recurring errors back into the lesson instead of leaving them on a marked worksheet.
2. General English
Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension practice follows. Explanations and worked examples show pupils what to look for, while guided questions help them apply the rule or select the relevant passage evidence.
3. Composition Practice
Pupils then practise planning and developing stories. Guidance covers picture choice, a logical sequence of events, paragraph development and accurate language. Feedback helps them see what needs expanding, clarifying or correcting.
Homework and Exam Preparation
Weekly Homework
Homework sets are given after each lesson to reinforce the General English components taught, including grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Pupils practise applying what they have learnt before reviewing their work during corrections.
Independent Writing
Additional writing practice gives pupils opportunities to write independently. Customised feedback on their writing guides them on what to develop, clarify or correct as they prepare for exams.
Mock Tests
Mock tests are held in May and October as part of exam preparation, giving pupils opportunities to apply the English skills they have practised.
How We Teach Primary 4 English Skills
Grammar and Vocabulary
Pupils identify the subject, time clues and sentence structure before choosing an answer. We explain how tenses, subject–verb agreement, conjunctions and prepositions work in context, then practise applying them in sentences and synthesis tasks.
Vocabulary practice considers meaning and usage, rather than memorising a word without knowing when it fits.
Comprehension and Cloze
Pupils break down what a question asks, locate relevant details and distinguish information stated directly from ideas they must infer. They practise forming complete answers with enough evidence, without copying unrelated parts of the passage.
For cloze practice, pupils read beyond the blank and check both grammar and meaning before deciding on a word.
Composition Writing
We guide pupils to connect the chosen picture to the topic and plan a story with a clear problem, developed main event and relevant ending. Writing practice focuses on precise actions, useful descriptions and paragraphs that move the story forward.
Pupils also check tense consistency, sentence boundaries and punctuation when reviewing their work.

Explaining Ideas Clearly
Discussion gives pupils opportunities to explain a grammar choice, describe a character’s feelings or suggest how a story could unfold. Guided questions help them move beyond a one-word response and give a reason for their answer.
This practice supports clearer thinking in comprehension and more deliberate choices in writing.
Small Classes, Specific Feedback
A maximum of eight pupils allows time to look at how each child approaches a task. Feedback is given when going through homework corrections and reviewing drafts of writing practice, so pupils can understand what to change and why.
During Homework Corrections
We explain the grammar rule, vocabulary clue or passage evidence behind an answer. For comprehension, feedback highlights whether the response answers the question and includes the necessary detail. Pupils use these explanations to correct their work and see what to check in a similar task.
On Writing Practice Drafts
Feedback focuses on how well the story addresses the topic, the order of events and which ideas need more development. We also highlight word choice, sentence structure, tense and punctuation, giving pupils guidance on what to expand, clarify or correct in their drafts.

Does this programme include both English and composition?
Yes. The weekly lesson includes homework corrections, General English practice and composition practice. Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension are taught alongside story planning, content development and language accuracy.
Can my child join if comprehension is stronger than writing?
Yes. Children may need different kinds of support across English components. Let us know which tasks your child finds difficult so we can discuss the programme and suitable class availability.
Is the programme suitable for a child who needs more support?
Lessons use explanation, examples and guided practice before pupils apply skills to their own work. Share your child’s current difficulties when enquiring so we can discuss whether the class is a suitable fit.
Will my child receive homework?
Yes. Homework reinforces the skills taught in class. Reviewing it at the start of the next lesson helps pupils revisit errors and practise correcting their work.
How will I know whether my child is progressing?
Look for changes in the work itself: fewer repeated grammar errors, more complete comprehension answers and better-developed story paragraphs. Progress varies with the child’s starting point and practice; we do not promise a fixed grade increase or timeframe.
