How to plan a Primary 2 story using SPACE?

If your child struggles with Primary 2 story planning, the problem is often not writing—but knowing what Primary 2 Story Planning: A Simple Method That Actually Works

If your child struggles with Primary 2 story planning, you’re not alone.

Many pupils:

  • Don’t know how to start
  • Write only 1–2 short sentences
  • Get stuck halfway through

The issue isn’t writing ability—it’s lack of structure.

That’s why we teach the SPACE writing strategy—a simple, proven method that helps pupils organise their ideas before they write.

Why Most Children Struggle with Composition

In school, pupils are often told to “write a story”… but not how to plan one.

Without a clear method, they:

  • Guess what to write
  • Miss out key story parts
  • Produce incomplete compositions

👉 This is why many parents start early with a structured foundation through our Primary 1 tuition programme, where pupils first learn how to build simple, complete ideas.

The SPACE Method for Primary 2 Story Planning

SPACE gives your child a clear system to follow every time.

Instead of guessing, they simply answer guided questions.

S for Setting

The setting tells the reader when, where, and who.

Pupils should look at Picture 1 for clues.

Guiding Questions:

  • Where did the story take place?
→ The story took place in the park.
  • When did the story take place?
→ The story took place on Sunday morning.
  • Who was the main character?
→ Mrs Tan was the main character.

P for Purpose

Every composition revolves around one main incident. The purpose explains why it happened.

This is usually shown in Picture 2 or 3.

Guiding Question:

  • What did the main character want to do?
→ Mrs Tan bumped into her friend and wanted to chat with her.

A for Action

The action shows what the character did next.

This develops the main event of the story.

Guiding Question:

  • What did the main character do then?
→ Mrs Tan did not pay attention to her pram and it slid down the slope.

C for Conclusion

Every composition needs a clear and logical ending.

This is shown in Picture 4.

Guiding Question:

What happened in the end?
→ A man helped to stop the pram from rolling away.elements in the appropriate paragraphs.

From Planning to Writing

Once pupils complete their SPACE plan, they will have:

  • A clear storyline
  • Logical sequence of events
  • Key ideas for each paragraph

This makes writing faster, easier, and more organised.

👉 For pupils who need more guided practice, our Primary 2 English tuition programme focuses on step-by-step composition planning techniques like SPACE to build confidence and improve results.

Why SPACE Works for Primary 2 Pupils

Many pupils struggle because they:

  • Jump straight into writing
  • Run out of ideas halfway
  • Write disorganised stories

SPACE solves this by giving them a simple thinking framework.

With consistent practice, pupils will be able to:

  • Plan quickly during exams
  • Write more complete stories
  • Feel more confident in composition writing

Final Tip for Parents

At Primary 2, the goal is not perfect writing—it’s clear structure and logical storytelling.

If your child can confidently answer the SPACE questions, they are already on the right track to strong composition skills.
