Many parents first notice their child’s Primary 5 English struggles when test scores begin to decline or homework suddenly takes much longer to complete. As students move from Primary 4 to Primary 5, the English syllabus becomes significantly more demanding, requiring stronger grammar, deeper comprehension skills, more developed composition writing and greater confidence in oral communication. While some children adapt quickly, others find the transition overwhelming. Recognising these Primary 5 English struggles early allows parents to provide timely support and prevent small learning gaps from becoming much bigger challenges before PSLE.
1. Weak grammar
Many Primary 5 pupils begin making grammar mistakes that they rarely made in the lower primary years. As the syllabus becomes more demanding, students are expected to apply grammar rules accurately instead of relying on intuition.
Common signs include:
- Incorrect verb tenses
- Subject-verb agreement errors
- Mistakes in pronouns and prepositions
- Weak performance in grammar cloze and editing sections
If your child frequently loses marks because of careless grammar mistakes despite understanding the topic, it may indicate that they need more structured guidance before these errors become habits.
2. Poor Comprehension
Primary 5 comprehension is no longer about finding answers directly from the passage. Students are expected to infer meaning, explain their answers and understand the writer’s intentions.
Your child may need additional support if they:
- Score well in vocabulary but poorly in comprehension
- Frequently misunderstand comprehension questions
- Leave open-ended questions blank
- Struggle to explain their answers clearly

3. Difficulty Writing
Composition writing becomes significantly more demanding in Primary 5. Students are expected to write longer, more organised stories with stronger vocabulary, clearer paragraphing and meaningful character development.
Some common warning signs include:
- Taking a long time to start writing
- Producing very short compositions
- Repeating simple vocabulary
- Frequently going off-topic
- Receiving comments such as “lack of development” or “needs more details”
Developing writing skills takes time. Starting early in Primary 5 gives students sufficient opportunities to build confidence before PSLE.
4. Low Confidence
Children who struggle with English often become reluctant to participate in class or attempt challenging questions. They may avoid reading aloud, hesitate when answering oral questions or become anxious before English examinations.
You may notice your child:
- Saying that English is “too difficult”
- Giving up easily when faced with longer passages
- Depending heavily on parents for homework
- Becoming frustrated after receiving English test papers
Confidence usually improves when students experience regular success and understand exactly how to approach different question types.
5. Falling Exam Scores
Perhaps the clearest sign is a noticeable drop in English results after entering Primary 5.
Many pupils who performed well in Primary 4 suddenly find themselves scoring much lower because the expectations have changed. The increase in difficulty affects every component of the English examination, including grammar, comprehension, composition and oral communication.
Rather than waiting until Primary 6, addressing these gaps during Primary 5 gives students more time to strengthen their foundations before the demands of PSLE become even greater.
