Starting Primary 1 English and Writing is an exciting step for young learners. At this stage, children begin to develop strong language foundations that prepare them for sentence writing, composition, and reading comprehension. Here’s what your child should know by the end of Primary 1:
🧠 1. Writing Basic Sentences

In Primary 1 English and Writing, children learn to write short, complete sentences using capital letters and full stops. They also start joining ideas with words like and, but, and because.
Example:
✅ “I like apples and oranges.”
✅ “The dog is running fast.”
By the end of the year, they should be able to write short sentences using the correct grammar by themselves. It is important to note that being able to copy sentences does not mean that they can write on their own.
🗣️ 2. Grammar and Vocabulary in Primary 1 English

Students expand their vocabulary through topics such as school, family, and animals. They learn to use simple verbs and adjectives, understand plural forms, and apply correct tenses in writing.
✍️ 3. Sentence Expansion and Story Building
Your child will begin to add details to make sentences more interesting — answering who, what, where, when.
Example:
“The boy runs.” → “The boy runs in the park every morning.”
📖 4. Early Composition Skills

In Primary 1 English writing, children start writing 3–5 sentence stories using four connected pictures. They learn to identify the main character, arrange ideas logically (beginning–middle–end) and describe actions or feelings. They also learn the basic story-writing skills – identifying the main character, the story problem and solution.
💬 5. Spelling and Handwriting Practice

Good writing also means neat handwriting and clear spelling. Why is neat handwriting important? Good handwriting is known to be a predictor of academic achievement. This means higher ability learners often have good handwriting.
Students use phonics to sound out words and practise spelling common sight words.
🌱 6. How Parents Can Support at Home

Parents can support the learning at home through:
- Daily reading aloud – It builds language skills and expands vocabulary.
- Encouraging children to describe pictures and experiences -This helps children in creating content when writing a story.
- Praising effort and creativity – This motivates children to try harder by building their self confidence.
