Top 3 themes for the PSLE English Composition exam for 2022
In a previous post, we talked about the common themes and titles for the PSLE English Composition exam. Naturally, new themes have been added over the years to test the students’ writing and thinking abilities.
As the Primary 6 Preliminary Examinations are over , here are the possible themes and related topics for the upcoming PSLE English Composition exam.
Common Theme 1
Self-discipline refers to one’s ability for self-control and to do some things to achieve your goals even if you do not like to do them.
In the recent years, this has been a common exam theme as the theme of self-discipline covers a wide range of skills which are easy to relate to for children:
a) Self-control and Self-regulation
An example is when a child self-regulates by learning when to stop eating unhealthy foods.
He then practises self-control by exercising intensively to lose weight.
b) Self-understanding and Self-motivation
This refers to when a child practises self-understanding by being aware that he performed poorly in a competition due to his complacency.
As such, he goes on to motivate himself to practise regularly to win the next competition.

Common Theme 3
Compassion is a strong feeling of sympathy and sadness towards the less fortunate as well as a strong desire to help them.
This theme has been a common exam theme over the years as it illustrates how compassion can make a difference to the lives of those around us.
To qualify as a mark-scoring story for the PSLE exams, students should refrain from writing a story of a simple act of kindness.
To fully illustrate the theme, students have to write a layered story. This could mean that compassion is employed to make a decision. Very often, this involves a certain sacrifice on the part of the main character in order to help others.
