Character voice
For Primary 5 writing, besides learning how to start the story with a flashback, giving a unique voice to the main character makes the story more interesting to the reader.
In this post, we will use a story based on the title “A new experience” to illustrate how to effectively use character voice to write a story.

1) Write the story in the first person narrative (“I”)
The first person narrative helps the reader to see everything from the main character’s point of view. This helps the reader connect closely with the main character’s feelings — from excitement and confidence at the start, to frustration and discouragement when they struggle, and finally to pride and happiness after succeeding.

2) For Primary 5 writing , use the main character’s voice to show their thoughts and feelings throughout the experience.
The story uses the main character’s voice in a lively and personal way. This allows the reader to clearly feel the character’s thoughts and emotions throughout the new experience.
In the beginning, the voice shows excitement as the main character looks forward to the new experience of learning ice-skating.

As the story progresses, the voice reveals frustration and self-doubt when the main character encounter difficulties learning how to skate.
The narrator’s inner thoughts and reactions (such as “This should be a piece of cake” and “Why does it have to be so hard?”) make the story sound natural and believable, as if the reader is hearing the character’s genuine voice. .

Finally, the voice becomes hopeful, showing determination , showing determination when the main character tried his best to learn. This is clearly shown by his inner thought ” I will try again. I am sure I will get the hang of it soon”
Then the voice changes to one of joy when the main character learns how to ice-skate. The thoughts and feelings also reflect the main character’s personality — enthusiastic, determined, and open to learning.

Overall, the main character’s voice makes the story more engaging by clearly expressing their thoughts and feelings throughout the new experience.
Using voice in your story is not as difficult as you might think. Try to bring out the character voice when you write your next story!
