Writing for Primary 5 – How to emphasize the title

When it comes to writing for Primary 5, meeting the exam requirements is just as important as applying the writing skills like character voice.

The main exam requirement is that the story must fully reflect the title. The story should show the idea or theme given in the title, so it is clear and relevant throughout the story. This means the reader should be able to understand why the story has that title after reading it.

Today, we will talk about the different ways that you can emphasize the title when writing a Primary 5 story.

Writing for Primary 5 - How to emphasize the title point 1 - Restate the title in the story

1) Restate the title in the story

This means you should mention the title (or its key words) somewhere in your story. The suggested paragraphs are the introduction, main event and conclusion.

This helps the reader see the connection between your story and the title, making your writing more focused and relevant. It shows the examiner that you understand the theme. It makes your story clearer and more connected to the title.

Example: If the title is “Being responsible”,

You could write:

  • In the main event – I knew that being responsible meant helping my mother with all the household chores since she was ill.
  • In the conclusion – I realised that being responsible at home was important as I learnt how to be independent as well as helpful.

2) Emphasize parts of the story most relevant to the title

When writing your story for Primary 5, you should make the sections that best show the meaning of the title stand out. This helps the reader and the marker see how your story connects to the theme or idea given in the title.

Focus on Key Events
Make sure the main events in your story clearly show the theme of the title. For example, if the title is “Being responsible,” identify the scenes that show the main character acting responsibly and describe the scenes in detail.

Use Descriptive Language:
Highlight actions, thoughts, or feelings that relate to the title. Use the character voice to write the title or keywords in the title.

For example, “Since Mother is ill, I should be responsible and do the household chores for her,” I thought.

3) Emphasize the Title in the Conclusion

By writing the title in the conclusion, it shows the marker that you understand the theme. It also makes your story feel like it has a complete ending which is focused on the title.

Reflect on the Main Lesson or Theme

  • Explain what the character learned or how they changed, relating it directly to the title.
  • Example: “Through this experience, I understood the true meaning of being responsible.”

Summarize the Story’s Connection to the Title

  • Briefly mention how the events in your story showed the theme.
  • Example: “Looking back, I realised how important it is to be responsible for my family and to help out when they are in times of need.”
